Comparative Study of 12 Multilateral Development Banks

VIALYBER, in partnership with EYETORUN, launched in 2024 a comparative study of 12 Multilateral Development Banks.

These 12 institutions display a wide variety of profiles and geographical scopes, which needs to be taken into account. They target the financing of projects in countries characterized by an average GDP per capita ranging from less than 3,300 US $ (PPP) to over 44,000 US $ (PPP); an average national poverty rates from 15.5 % to 47.6 %; and an average Human Development Index (HDI) from 0.486 to 0.919.

Each of these institutions, therefore, operates within very different socio-economic contexts and thus serves a range of different strategic priorities.

This study covers 5 topics, for which we have defined relevant criteria and corresponding indicators:

  • Strategy & Governance to provide a picture of the DNA of studied institutions, including a focus on their senior management.

  • Organization to provide insights into the evolution of the working environment and operational dynamics of each studied MDB.

  • Financial Efficiency to provide key metrics about the financial performance of MDBs’ banking activities.

  • Social and Environmental Impact to evaluate the commitment of studied MDBs to social responsibility and environmental sustainability.

  • Digital Footprint to gauge the engagement of studied MDBs with digital platforms and their efforts towards increasing visibility.
